Pune is a city of Maharashtra which has got the beautiful and worth visiting zoo, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park or the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo. The zoo is located near Katraj. The Pune Municipal Corporation is responsible for its maintenance and they are doing a commendable job of managing it. The total area of the zoo is 130 acres. The zoo is divided into 3 sections, one for animal orphanage, the second houses snakes (thus called Snake Park also) and a zoo. Apart from these 3 sections, it also includes an area of 42-acre of Katraj Lake.

The Pune Municipal Corporation initially created the Peshwe Park in 1953 of about 7 acres. In 1986 Mr. Neelam Kumar Khaire created the Katraj Snake Park, with the assistance of Pune Municipal Corporation on the land that later was used to create the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.

The attraction of the zoo, it is a home for various species of reptiles, mammals, and birds.

The animal section: The king of animals the Tiger, is called by the name of ‘Tanaji’ and also the zoo has a white tiger. Among other animals, there are leopard, sloth bears, sambhars, barking deer etc.

The snake park: This section is a home for various snakes, reptiles and birds and turtles also. Over 160 species of snakes inhibit the snake population and the biggest of them is a 9 foot long King Cobra. You can also come to see the Brown Palm Civet which is the major attraction of the park, and said to be the only specimen of its kind left. The snake park also organizes programs or ceremonies through which they try and eliminate the terror regarding this species from the visitors.

The other specialty of this Zoo is it is the perhaps one of very few zoos in India, which gives shelter to a lot of injured and orphaned animals too. The authority is running an Animal Adoption Scheme since October 2010. The Zoo has a team of specialized experts who treat the injured animals to give them another chance of life and be with other animals.

Asia has many exotic birds and animals and zoos here are rife with these marvelous creatures of Mother Nature.

Karnataka is a land which has the best travel pleasures and the most fascinating tour delights. This is a land that is filled with the greatest luxurious adventures and is a region that would leave you gasping for more.

The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is one such place which has the best amalgamation of tour delights and wildlife tours. So come to this land and go to the region overlooking the Bhadra reservoir. With the best safari arrangements here this is one amazing destination that on shouldn’t miss. The weather here is very perfect and the overcast clouds along with the lovely rainy ambience give the greatest thrilling memories and fill your travel with the most fascinating moments.

Not much light actually seeps through this land as there is a thick covering of dense vegetation and a canopy of deciduous forests. So the lovely ambience gets further enhanced by the verdant surroundings. This is a sanctuary that was under the Project Tiger initiative of the Government t and was launched some decades back and it was mainly done with the motive of stopping the sudden decline of the population of tigers and this was one way of saving the endangered species. It is really not easy to spot a tiger here and those who do are really lucky.
A safari tour here would give you the other wildlife sights like the spotted deer and also the lovely collection of flora that is very special and typical here. Then of course you have the Barking deer which is one animal that is heard more and seen very less. The deer makes a sound which is akin to a dog barking. As the noise pierces through the quiet jungle it does make a special wildlife experience. These deer run away at the sight of human beings and it is only really lucky to see one and capture on camera. Don’t miss this lovely opportunity.

Then there are those herds of elephants that are often seen here without any trouble. As they come in search of water to the water hole, it is only the most experienced guide who could actually guide you through these exciting tours and who makes it possible for you to completely enjoy the wildlife thrill here.

The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a heaven for all the bird lovers and is the ideal way one can actually enjoy the surroundings of a place where you get to see the lovely crested serpent eagle, the jungle fowl, the black Drongos and the black headed ibis. This is where you also get to see the woodpecker pecking away to glory and also the most beautiful peacocks. Come here and enjoy the lovely sights of the green bee eaters and the white breasted water hen. Then there is the hornbill and the Malabar Grey Hornbill which makes a visit here to this land extremely memorable and very interesting.

Here there are many forest officials who have made dwellings here and it is an intrigue to all to see how they inhabit these regions without any trouble and any qualms. The mobile signals here are not very clear and it is only those who live in lodges which arrange for safari tours who can go around the wildlife zones in Karnataka. So make sure you book yourself in a hotel which arranges for these fascinating memorable and cherishable tours.

There is one other special note of advice to all those who wish to come here and that is that it is better to know a smattering of the local Kannada language as it is seen that invariably the guides seem to know only the local language. But the ambience and the surroundings are so mesmerizing that language or no language, transport or no transport, you are sure to come back with an eternal feeling of having been in a land of greatest pleasures and absolute thrill.

The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a lovely region filled with great adventurous experiences. Do visit it.

The sanctuary has a dense growth of babul trees and the place also has water plants like vallisneria, pistia, hydrilla and eichornia.

How to Reach

Manjira is very near the city of Hyderabad, which is around 150 kilometres from here.

The dense vegetation of the state of Andhra Pradesh provides the ideal wildlife locale for the Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary and it is an intrigue to see the collection of deciduous forests and mangroves. The Nallmalai region has the loveliest amalgamation of deciduous trees and the Coringa mangrove belt has a great variety of mangroves. This is thus an ideal spot for the wildlife variety.

Besides the amazing species of birds and reptiles in the Manjira verdant expanse, one also finds the tiger, wild boar, panther, fox, jungle muntjak and the gaur here. You also have the spotted deer, wild dog and the sloth bear which add to the beauty of the region. Fishing cats are common here and also the salt water crocodiles.

Located near Sangareddy in the district of Medak, the sanctuary lies between the Singur and the Manjira barrages.

Said to be created out of nine small islands, this region is a hub of migratory birds, wild animals and also muggers. The Puttigadda, Sangamadda, Bapangadda and the Karnamgadda are some of the islands of this region. They are also the main breeding and nesting places for the birds here. The birds nest here due to the thick vegetation of the region.

Crocodiles are found in plenty here as mentioned earlier. These number more than 300 in the sanctuary. In the year 1974, in fact the mugger had reached a stage of extinction in the state of Andhra Pradesh. But the Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary today has preserved four pairs of the muggers as it provides an original habitat for the mugger. This area where the muggers are found is today declared as a crocodile sanctuary spanning over 20 square kilometers. There is a crocodile breeding program that is conducted here.

The best time to visit the Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary is from November to March.

Wildlife sanctuary zones are created to protect the animals and preserve their species. These zones allow the animals, birds and reptiles to live at their own pace and at their will. This results in a good collection of their own species. So the Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary provides not only the right habitat, but also the best sights for the tourist.
