The Blackpool zoo is one zoo that I know has definitely come of age. It was set up in the year 1972, by the Blackpool Council. In today’s age and date, it is owned by Parques Reunidos. Located just a couple of miles off the sea-front of Blackpool; this zoological garden boasts of about 1500 exotic animals. This is far cry from the original herd of about 12 animals that the officials began with. The zoo sits close to the Stanley Park and is said to boast of an extremely esteemed collection of reptiles, animals and even exotic birds.

Dinosaur Safari:

This is perhaps one of the biggest and unique-most selling points of the Blackpool Zoo. This safari ride will take you back into history and let you take a peek at how that memorable era went by – the time when these giants roamed the earth.

The safari will take you past the T Rex, and some other inspiring pterodactyls. The amazing part of the safari is the visually mesmerizing enormous volcano that is bursting; and you’ll be taken over currents and even past water geysers that are running. You’d also experience a meteorite crashing into the Earth; and all this has been done to bring the historic past back to life. This dinosaur safari makes for quite an informative experience and will definitely leave kids better informed about these magnificent creatures from the past.

The Pride of Blackpool:

The Blackpool zoo officials take pride in their beautiful pride of lions and lionesses that live here. They have recently refurbished the enclosure with paddocks that are multi surfaced. This has allowed them to work out a special feature in the rocks, which will allow for heating during the months of winter. This would allow the pride to bask in clear air; and keep them comfortable at the same time.

Gorilla Mountain:

The zoo is proud of its prize winning enclosure meant for gorillas. There are 4 adults here at the moment; and they’re free to roam the enclosure while they look for small treats that have been stashed away by the keepers of the zoo. The gorillas looking for the treats do make for an entertaining experience for the visitors; while the gorillas also end up getting their treats. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Recent Additions To The Zoo:

Four of the world’s smallest otters have now been born and are being successfully reared at the zoo. This has happened for the first time in their history. The quartet, made up of four of these tiny Asian Small Clawed Otters, are said to be out and about now. This specie is classified as being ‘vulnerable in the wild’.

Three female lion cubs were also added to the pride of lions this year. This is the first time that lions were born in the zoo, the first time in 25 years. The lioness mother is said to be taking good care of the cubs; and they’re growing well.

If you get only a few weeks off from your workplace and you want to do something beyond the normal ‘holiday package’, you could try out going on a volunteer holiday. This would help you get an insider’s view on the culture and living of the region you decide to visit; plus, you come back feeling satisfied about having helped out in your own little way.

Volunteer Holidays in Greece:

So you’ve decided to hit the European coast for your holidays this time; but you want to do your own little bit of good when you’re there. If you do zero in on Greece, we have just the idea for you. You could join the Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine Terrestrial Life on the Ionian Island of Kefalonia as part of their volunteer holidays program. If you volunteer with them, you will receive training to work directly with the endangered sea turtles – the Caretta caretta sea turtles.

This main national turtle protection organization in the region of Greece is known to offer ample opportunities for the volunteers who choose to make their way here.

The main activity of the group is to try and conserve the endangered sea turtles called the Caretta caretta. This region is the local nesting ground for the turtles; and this is why it becomes important for the region to be preserved as just that. The field work of this group completely and fully relies on the volunteers. Seasonal volunteers are needed to help out here.

This is where the idea of volunteer holidays came into play. Ever since the group has begun inviting international volunteers, it’s been doing very well.

The Decalogue For Tourists:

Given the fact that the first and most major source of disturbance to the sea turtles are the tourists and the developments brought about by the tourism sector, there was a need for a Decalogue that could help the tourists in lowering their impact on the sea turtles of the region while fully enjoying their holidays.

The turkey was pitted by Benjamin Franklin to be the national bird of the United States. This noble fowl is a favorite dish among Native Americans. With the arrival of the Europeans, the turkey was one of the two domestic birds that are native to America. The Muscovy duck is the other bird.

By the early 20th century, wild turkey ceased to roam over their normal range. Hunting wiped out a large population of turkeys. Their woodland habitat is also in danger of disappearing.

Wild turkeys primarily forage on forest floors. In addition, they can also be found in grasslands and swamps. They predominantly feed on nuts, seeds, fruits, insects, and salamanders.

The 1940s saw the reintroduction programs for wild turkey. The birds were relocated to regions where the population was low. The woodlands were still recovering. However, the conservation efforts have worked efficiently. Wild turkeys now reside in regions where they would not be earlier found when the Europeans first invaded America. Presently, flocks of turkeys are found in Hawaii, Europe, and New Zealand.

Male turkeys display characteristic ruffled feathers. They have a fan-like tail and a bare head. A bright beard is also associated with turkeys. Turkeys tend to gobble with a characteristic sound that can be heard a mile away.

Female turkeys on an average lay four to 17 eggs. After the chicks hatch, they feed them for a few days. Young turkeys learn to fend for themselves from a very early age. The mother-child flocks may include scores of animals. Male turkeys do not play any role in the care of young ones.

Domestic turkeys tend to have white-tipped tails. These turkeys are descendants of a Mexican subspecies. They were taken to Europe in the 16th century with domestication in mind. They appear different from wild turkey. There have been other physical discrepancies due to captive diet, breeding, and lifestyle changes.

The Waterton National Park was created in the year 1895. It is spread across 140 square kilometers. The park is fourth of its kind in Canada and one of the smallest in the Canadian Rockies. The size of the park has varied over the year. Presently, it occupies 505 square kilometers of land.

There have been an increasing number of recommendations to include the Waterton lakes in the park area. This has been done mainly to ensure conservation. The park gets its name from the lakes. The chain of lakes was named by Lieutenant Blakiston in honor of British naturalist, Squire Charles Waterton.

Waterton National Park is representative of the southern Rocky Mountains Natural Region. Here, the ancient Rocky Mountains meet the prairie lands. The landscape has been altered by wind, fire, and flooding.

The park is part of a unique ecosystem offering myriad physical, biological, and cultural resources. The ecosystem comprises one of the narrowest places of the chain of Rocky Mountains. This makes the position of the national park very important.

Waterton comprises many ecological regions. The prairie vegetation of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain plants of the northern areas overlap with the coastal plants from the Pacific Northwest. The park is home to more than 45 habitat types, including grasslands, shrubs, wetlands, spruce-fir, pine and aspen forests. The variety of plants is not proportionate to the area. Besides 1000 vascular plant species, there are 182 bryophytes and 218 lichen species. Most of these are rare and on the verge of extinction. Nearly half of the plant species in Alberta can be found in Waterton.

The park is home to nearly 60 species of mammals. There are also 250 species of birds, 24 of fish, and 10 of reptiles and amphibians. Wolf, coyote, cougar, grizzly bear, and American black bear are the famous predators of the region. The grasslands are home to elk, mule deer, and white-tailed deer. The season of fall sees the usage of marsh and lake areas by migrating ducks, swans, and geese. Some of the rarer species include trumpeter swans, Vaux’s swifts, and vagrant shrews.

Waterton National Park is important globally because of its many designations. The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is designed as a symbol of peace between the United States and Canada. It has now evolved into a symbol for cooperation. Both parks are designed to protect the ecosystem with the help of shared management.

In 1995, the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park has been granted world heritage status due to its distinctive climate, mountain-prairie interface, physiographic setting, and tri-ocean hydrographical divide. The flora and fauna are abundant.

The two historic sites within the park include the Prince of Wales Hotel National Historic Site and Lineham Discovery Well National Historic Site.
