    Sequoia National Park

    Sequoia National Park is located in the southern Sierra Nevada in Tulare County in California in the USA. The park, which covers an area of 1,635 square kilometres, was set up in 1890. Sequoia National Park features a vertical relief of nearly 4,000 metres (the western slope of USA’s highest summit Mt. Whitney is located here) and is contiguous with Kings Canyon National Park that lies to its north. Both parks are administered by the National Park Service. The combined area of thses two national parks is 3,504 square kilometres and the altitude ranges from 418 metres to 4,421 metres, height of Mt Whitney.     Shenandoah National Park is located in the state of Virginia (it touches as many as eight counties) in eastern United States. Shenandoah national Park is a hot tourist destination with a footfall of over million people every year. Total area of the park, which was set up in 1935, is 805 square kilometres. Geography: Shenandoah National Park features segments of Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.     Acadia National Park is located on the Atlantic coast off Down East region of Maine, near the town of Bar Harbor in New England in the United States. The national park, comprising much of Mount Desert Island and other smaller islands off the Atlantic coast, features diverse geographical features like mountains, coastline, lakes and woodlands. Areawise, Acadia National Park comprises 123 square kilometres are on Mount Desert Island, 11 square kilometres area on Isle au Haut (small island located southeast of Mount Desert Island) and 9 square kilometres area on the Schoodic Peninsula in the mainland.     Zion National Park is located in southern Utah (Washington, Kane and Iron counties) in the USA.  The park is a top tourist attraction for its incredible rock formations and high sandstone cliffs and also desert landscapes including sandstone canyons, mesas and high plateau regions. The 24 km long and 800 metres deep Zion Canyon is a significant feature of Zion National Park (area: 593 square kilometres). The national park was established way back in 1909 and is governed by the National Park Service. Geography: Zion National Park is situated at the junction of Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and Mojave Desert regions.     Glacier National Park is located in the state of Montana in the USA, bordering the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia of neighbouring Canada. The park is spread over an area of 4,047 square kilometres and has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Glacier National Park along with adjoining Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada is known as Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.     Yosemite National Park is located in Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in east-central California in the USA. The national park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, sequoia groves and rich biological diversity. The national park with an area of 1200 square miles, is the third most visited national park in the country. The park was established in 1890. Mariposa is the nearest city to Yosemite National Park.     Out of the wood appears a massive beast, with tusks protruding like spears and a trunk resembling a tree.  Its ears flap wildly while the small amber eyes burn with unsparing firmness.  It trumpets and begins to charge. This is in a nutshell an African elephant. African elephant (loxodonta africana) is the largest living land mammal that inhabits places that have adequate food, in the form of grass, and water. These massive animals are known as Tembo or ndovu in Swahili. The general life span of the African elephants is between 60-70 years. Size: African elephants are much bigger in size than Asian Elephants.     Badlands National Park

    Badlands National Park is located in southwestern part of South Dakota (Jackson, Pennington and Shannon Counties) in the United States. The national park spread over an area of 2,44,000 includes the Badlands Wilderness and features rugged terrain and unique rock formations in the shape of colourful domes and canyons. These formations, however, stand in stark contrast against the hills and prairies where they are located. Badlands was declared as Badlands National Monument in March, 1929 but it was officially established only in January 1939. It was redesignated as a national park in November 1978.     Mesa Verde National Park is located in Montezuma County in southwestern Colorado in the USA. Mesa Verde (Spanish term meaning ‘green table’ in English), spread across an area of 211 square kilometres and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is particularly famous for its well-preserved cliff dwellings, which undoubtedly earn reputation as some of the most spectacular archaeological attractions in the entire North American continent.
