Wonderful Experience At The Snake Park and Zoo of Pune

Pune  is a city of Maharashtra which has got the beautiful and worth visiting zoo, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park or the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo.  The zoo is located near Katraj. The Pune Municipal Corporation is responsible for its maintenance and they are doing a commendable job of managing it.   The total area of the zoo is 130 acres.   The zoo is divided into 3 sections, one for animal orphanage, the second houses snakes (thus called Snake Park also) and a zoo.  Apart from these 3 sections, it also includes an area of 42-acre of Katraj Lake.

The Pune Municipal Corporation initially created the Peshwe Park in 1953 of about 7 acres.  In 1986 Mr. Neelam Kumar Khaire created the Katraj Snake Park, with the assistance of Pune Municipal Corporation on the land that later was used to create the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.

The attraction of the zoo, it is a home for various species of reptiles, mammals, and birds.

The animal section:  The king of animals the Tiger, is called by the name of ‘Tanaji’ and also the zoo has a white tiger.  Among other animals, there are leopard, sloth bears, sambhars, barking deer etc.

The snake park:  This section is a home for various snakes, reptiles and birds and turtles also.  Over 160 species of snakes inhibit the snake population and the biggest of them is a 9 foot long King Cobra.  You can also come to see the Brown Palm Civet which is the major attraction of the park, and said to be the only specimen of its kind left.  The snake park also organizes programs or ceremonies through which they try and eliminate the terror regarding this species from the visitors.

The other specialty of this Zoo is it is the perhaps one of very few zoos in India, which gives shelter to a lot of injured and orphaned animals too.  The authority is running an Animal Adoption Scheme since October 2010.  The Zoo has a team of specialized experts who treat the injured animals to give them another chance of life and be with other animals.

Asia has many exotic birds and animals and zoos here are rife with these marvelous creatures of Mother Nature.
